The Barstow baseball team topped City College of San Francisco 6-3 on Thursday to improve to 2-14.
Head coach James Stellino has emphasized the need to be patient at the plate which will eventually lead to timely hitting. On Thursday, a combination of that patience, along with a strong pitching performance towards the latter part of the game, showed what this team is capable of.
Marcus Sanchez started the first inning by reaching first base on a fielding error. Last season's all-conference player Lucas Lefebvre didn't wait long to put the Vikings on top with a double to bring home Sanchez. Tyler Sexton followed with a triple, bringing home Lefebvre to increase the lead 2-0. Sexton then scored after a wild pitch, adding to the tally 3-0. Brock McCormick added the final run of the first with his first homerun of the season to bring the score 4-0.
Compared to previous games, the Vikings started this game strong and kept the momentum on their side. In addition, the pitching of Tommie Davis, Kaden Duffy, and Brendon Demoth shut out San Francisco after 4 innings, keeping their pitch count low, a focus that the coaching staff has emphasized throughout the season.
Lefebvre added another RBI during the bottom of the 2nd (5-0) and M. Gutierrez singled in the bottom of the 6th bringing home N. Melgar which gave the Vikings a 6-3 lead.
The team will travel on Tuesday, February 28 to Victor Valley College which will be the first conference match-up of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
