Barstow wins fifth straight
BARSTOW- The Barstow Vikings pushed their winning streak to five games over the weekend with wins over Santa Monica and Taft College.
The Vikings beat Santa Monica 8-0 and 17-4 on Friday. Barstow knocked off Taft 12-4 and 25-2 on Saturday.
Vivien Gutierrez paced the Vikings with three wins, while Alyssa Figueroa picked the win up the final game.
"We pitched well and had a nice approach at the plate," said coach Tim Syrek. "We still need to improve our defense but we are getting where we need to be."
Gutierrez pitched a two hit shutout in the first game on Friday striking out eight. Kiki Hicks, Natalie Medina and Alyssa Zambrano all had two hits. In the second game, Hicks scored four runs and Gutierrez had five RBI. Medina and Alyssa Avalos each added three RBI.
On Saturday, the Vikings broke open a close game with six runs in the fifth innings. Hicks cranked a home run. In game two, Barstow scored 13 runs in the fourth inning and had 22 hits as a team.
Barstow plays Wednesday at San Jacincto for a 3 p.m. start.
