Despite slow start, Vikings confident to right ship
Although the Barstow women's basketball team is off to a rocky start, having lost their first three games, the coaching staff is confident that they'll right the ship.
Although the Barstow women's basketball team is off to a rocky start, having lost their first three games, the coaching staff is confident that they'll right the ship.
"Currently, we are a team that lacks a lot of playing experience as a unit," states head coach Devon Davis. "However, as the season progresses, we will learn how to play with each other and compete. Even though we are 0-3, we continue to play better each and every game, which is a good sign moving forward."
One of the elements that players are quickly realizing is the importance of executing on both offense and defense. In collegiate basketball, the pace of the game is much faster and you have to match the focus and intensity of your opponents in order to be successful.
Ajayah Lively is currently leading the team in scoring, which includes scoring 30 points twice against Citrus College and SD City College. Lively also leads the team in steals and sets the tone on defense. Lively has stepped up as the vocal leader of the team and leads by example. She is the perfect embodiment of a student-athlete with her natural ability to lead her teammates. Furthermore, she is easily coachable.
The team will travel to West LA College on Friday to take on Hartnell College at the annual West LA College Tournament. The coaching staff continues to preach positiveness with the team despite the slow start. They are reminded that the season is a marathon, not a sprint.
